With mobile device manufactures each having their own preferred development environment, there has been a growth in mobile phone application development frameworks.
The vast majority of these frameworks use HTML, CSS and Javascript allowing web savvy developers to use their existing knowledge and skills to publish mobile applications to multiple devices. This is great news, as i don’t know a single developer who has any experience working with objective C (the language required to develop native iPhone applications) So now that these frameworks exist, what do they cost, how easy are they to use, and what platforms do they support?
Below is a short list of what we found:
| Worklight | Phonegap | Rhomobile | Titanium | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FREE | NO | YES | YES | YES |
| iOS support | YES | YES | YES | YES |
| Android support | YES | YES | YES | YES |
| Blackberry support | YES | YES | YES | Future |
| Easy to use | YES | So-So | YES | YES |
| Build on cloud | YES | YES | ? | NO |
It seems that each framework has its strengths and weaknesses, so it is probably best to try a few to try a few and to decide what works best for you. From our experience we will be trying further development in Phonegap and Titanium.
Be sure to check back as we dig deeper and learn more about these frameworks.
